Wat Arun also has name as Ratcha Wararam Ratchaworamahawihan (วัดอรุณราชวรารามราชวรมหาวิหาร). It is named after the Hindu god – Aruna, the saint of the rising sun. Arun Buddhist temple was built in the early 19th century. Specifically, its construction began during the reign of King Rama II in the early 1800s and was completed in the early 1820s, under the reign of King Rama III.

Wat Arun stands out as a visually striking temple with intricate porcelain-decorated details on its 5 main prangs. The main prang (spire) at the center offers a captivating impact due to its multicolored porcelain pieces adorning 82 meters tall sculpture, making it a striking symbol that captures all locals and global visitors attention. 

 

Four smaller prangs surrounding the major prang have beautiful embellishments, each of which symbolizes the Hindu mythological Mount Meru.

Situated on the Thonburi on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun offers breathtaking contrast views on the crystal river surface. It is known as the Temple of Dawn for the combination of the sunset sky and its reflections in the lake! Visitors can take a ferry across the river to reach the temple or enjoy a boat ride along the river to capture expansive views of Bangkok’s skyline at sunset.

How to get there

To reach Wat Arun, you can choose among public transportation or by taxi/tuktuk:

  1. By River Ferry: You can board a river ferry at various piers in Bangkok, such as Sathorn Pier or Tha Tien Pier. From there, take a cross-river ferry to Wat Arun Pier, which is right in front of the temple.
  2. By Taxi or Tuk-tuk: Simply provide the driver with the name of the temple, and they will take you directly to the entrance. (Be sure to negotiate the fare or use the meter for taxis)
  3. By Public Bus: Find a bus route that passes by the temple or nearby landmarks, such as bus numbers 19, 57, 83, or 149. Check the bus schedules and stops to plan your journey accordingly.
  4. By BTS Skytrain and Ferry Combination: If you’re staying near the BTS Skytrain, you can take the train to Saphan Taksin Station (S6) on the Silom Line. From there, walk to Sathorn Pier and catch the cross-river ferry to Wat Arun Pier.
  5. Guided Tours: Joining a guided tour is another convenient option. Many tour operators offer day tours that include transportation, entrance fees, and a guide who can provide insights about the temple’s history and significance.

 

Prior to visiting, don’t forget to verify the operation hours as well as any unique limitations or closures. When approaching the temple grounds, it’s also advisable to dress modestly and with respect, covering your knees and shoulders as a gesture of observance for the holy location.
