The most important ritual practice at the Golden Temple is the daily continuous gurbani kirtan (singing). This singing activity begins early in the morning with the opening of the doors of the Akal Takht, where the Adi Granth book rests each night.

Once the doors open in the early morning and the singing starts, the Adi Granth is carried to the main sanctum of the Golden Temple. Devotees engage in gurbani kirtan throughout the day until late at night, when the Adi Granth is returned to the Akal Takht.
