It’s a popular choice for budget travelers, with numerous guesthouses, bungalows, and restaurants catering to a range of budgets. You can rent bicycles to explore the island’s trails, go kayaking or tubing on the Mekong River, or simply relax in a hammock and soak up the peaceful island life.
Slightly larger and more developed than Don Det, Don Khon still retains its rural charm. The island is known for the beautiful French colonial-era bridge and the remnants of the Don Det–Don Khon narrow gauge railway. Si Phan Don’s Irrawaddy Dolphin Sanctuary
Beside the spectacular nature formation, Si Phan Don also offers a rare opportunity to witness the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins in their natural habitat. These gentle creatures are a wonderful sight in the Mekong River with their distinct bulbous foreheads and playful dynamics.
The best place to spot Irrawaddy dolphins is near the southern tip of Don Khon Island, where a deep pool in the Mekong River provides their habitat. You can easily hire a boat from the main beach of Don Khon or the old French pier on Don Khon to take you to the dolphin-spotting area.
While sightings are possible year-round, the best time for Irrawaddy dolphin watching is during the dry season (November to May), when the water levels are low and the dolphins are more active in the deeper pools. Early mornings or late afternoons are generally considered the optimal times for viewing, as the dolphins are more active during these periods.
