The history and story of Yangsan

Deep in the depths of the waterfall once lived a dragon. This dragon, known for the wisdom and benevolent nature, watched over the area and its inhabitants. One day, a radiant rainbow appeared, arching across the sky and touching down at the waterfall’s base. Sensing an opportunity for transcendence, the dragon emerged from the pool and ascended into the heavens, riding the vibrant arc of the rainbow.

Situated in the Chunseoungsan Mountains of Yangsan (just outside of Busan), this temple is quite difficult to get to. Hongryongsa Temple has a unique location next to the cascading waterfall, from which the temple derives its name. The sacred site has a rich history, originally founded during the Silla Dynasty in the 7th century by the renowned monk Wonhyo. It was later destroyed during the Imjin War and rebuilt in the early 20th century.

Plan your visit

The best time to visit Yangsan Hongryong Waterfall is during the spring or summer months, particularly after a period of rainfall. During these seasons, the waterfall is at its peak flow, creating a dramatic and powerful cascade. The surrounding foliage is also lush and vibrant, providing a beautiful backdrop for the falls.

Avoid visiting during the winter months as the waterfall tends to dry up, significantly reducing its visual impact. Additionally, be mindful of heavy rainfall, as the trails leading to the waterfall can become slippery and dangerous.
