Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, situated in China’s Hunan Province, is a spectacular natural wonder that has captured the imaginations of people around the world. Renowned for its towering sandstone pillars and ethereal mists, the park offers a landscape that feels straight out of a fantasy film.
From UNESCO World Heritage Site to Hollywood Blockbuster
Established in 1982 as China’s first national forest park, Zhangjiajie is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the larger Wulingyuan Scenic Area. The park’s unique geological formations formed over millions of years through erosion. These towering pillars, often shrouded in mist, create an otherworldly atmosphere that has inspired countless artists and filmmakers, most notably serving as inspiration for the floating mountains in the movie Avatar.
While the Hallelujah Mountains’ floating appearance and bioluminescent components were CGI creations, Zhangjiajie’s actual scenery heavily influenced the pillars’ distinctive shapes and towering heights. Even the name of one of the park’s most famous pillars, the “Southern Sky Column,” was officially changed to “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” in 2010 to commemorate the film’s connection to the park.
Your Mesmerizing Nature Trail
Beyond its iconic pillars, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park boasts a diverse range of natural wonders. Visitors can explore deep canyons, crystal-clear streams, and hidden waterfalls, all while surrounded by a rich tapestry of flora and fauna. The park offers a variety of activities for outdoor enthusiasts, including hiking, climbing, and breathtaking cable car rides.
One of the park’s most popular attractions is the Bailong Elevator, also known as the “Hundred Dragons Elevator”. This glass elevator, built into the side of a cliff, offers thrilling views as it ascends over 300 meters to the top of a sandstone pillar.
Another must-see is the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, the world’s longest and highest glass-bottomed bridge, providing a heartbreaking experience for those brave enough to cross it.
